There used to be a time, when Indian film music used to have excellent lyrics, was simple and melodious. As time profressed, the quality deteriorated and the 1980's and 90's saw very poor quality film music. However the tide has turned now and nowadays the quality of Indian music ,both film and non film categories, has improved a lot. There is a vast amount of experimenting and innovation in this field. With our vast repertoire of music such as folk music, Hindustani classical, Carnatic classical, the various gharanas, each witth its own distinctive style etc., the resources available to today's musicians are almost infinite. Some of the songs coming out from the studios of our music directors are just incredible, to say the least. Listening to such songs totally captivates me and it is almost as if a spell has been cast over me. Moreover, listening to music has never been so easy. The latest film music is freely available for download on the web and you can listen to whichever song you like without having to rewind cassettes, as we used to do before the advent of mp3 players. Further if one wanted to learn a song , one had to note it down by patiently listening to a cassette , rewinding it again and again. Nowadays , you just have to google the song and then take a printout of the lyrics.
One song that recently caught my attention was " pyar hai ya sada, ai mere dil bata " from the film Unrao jaan ( new). Although the film was not a success, this song is very good. I immediately ran a google search and downloaded the song after locating it on the net.
